There is little consensus about the impact of high stakes testing on students, teachers, schools, and the general public's perception of education. Without considering the ultimate impact of such tests, this paper reviews the immediate impact by examining the test scores of students from different racial and ethnic groups in Texas, New York. High-stakes testing and its impact. High-stakes testing refers to the use of standardized test results to evaluate schools, teachers, and/or students, often for the purpose of public accountability; it is associated with sanctions or rewards as consequences, which may involve grade promotion, graduation, salaries, school reputation, and school.
